It is the most frequently administered treatment option. Some medication aims to decrease the production of aqueous fluid, but also to increase drainage. They are used either as monotherapy or as combination therapy.
This treatment aims to either increase drainage of aqueous fluid (argon laser trabeculoplasty or diode laser trabeculoplasty), as is the case with usual glaucoma (open angle glaucoma) or the facilitation of the outflow of aqueous fluid by creating a peripheral “opening” in the iris (iridotomy with Nd:YAG laser), as is the case with closed angle glaucoma.
It is used when conservative treatment is unable to control the progress of glaucoma. There are many surgical options, but they all aim at improving the outflow by creating a new drainage system.
